A 12-year-old boy sustained a serious injury as a result of an incident on school grounds in Whitby on Tuesday morning.

On Tuesday, February 16, 2021, at approximately 9:40 a.m., emergency responders were called to Julie Payette Public school on Garden Street in Whitby, after two students were injured from snow being pushed by a front-end loader snowplow. The snow-clearing vehicle was working on an adjacent residential property when the injuries were sustained.

An 11-year-old girl was partially buried in the snow and sustained minor injuries. She was treated and released by emergency services on the scene.

A 12-year-old boy was completely buried in the snow and sustained serious injuries. Responding officers performed CPR before he was transported to a local hospital. He was later transferred to a trauma centre in Toronto.

Members of Durham Regional Police attended the scene and are conducting a parallel investigation with the Ministry of Labour, Training, and Skills Development.
